International students: an interesting talent pool?

How do you manage the expectations of international workers?

Each person is different and therefore has different expectations when assistance with immigration and relocation is offered from the employer, culture plays an important role. Managing these expectations of international workers is essential to ensure a successful start.

Here are some tips to help you manage expectations effectively:

1. Clearcommunication: Communicate clearly what workers can expect from the immigration and relocation process. Explain what steps need to be taken, what documents are required, how long the process may take, which parties will assist the employee, and who to contact with questions.

2. Support: Offer both the worker and accompanying family members support in finding housing, registering with the municipality and arranging other practical matters. This not only contributes to an excellent employee experience, but also ensures that the employee can fully focus on working in the new country right after arrival.

3. Stay in touch: You can never communicate too much. Keep in regular contact with employees to see how they are doing and if they have any questions. This can help resolve any issues quickly, and also adds to the overall employee experience.

4. Discuss cultural differences: Make workers and their partners aware of the cultural differences between their country of origin and country of destination. This could be about norms and values, corporate culture, standards of living or customs and practices. By discussing cultural differences, you create awareness and the development of intercultural competencies. This usually ensures smooth acclimatization in the new country, both privately and professionally, and provides clear expectations for the employee.

5. Be honest: Be honest about what workers can expect from their new jobs and their life in the destination country. This can help create realistic expectations and avoid disappointments, such as in finding housing.

We know from practice that most customer employee “dissatisfaction” arises from a difference in expectations and (lack of) communication. By providing good support, you can add value and increase motivation and productivity, which contributes to the success of your business.
